The Track That Started It All: The Story Behind Shawn Mendes’ First Song, “Life of the Party”
Long before he was selling out massive stadiums worldwide, headlining global charts, and cementing his status as a pop icon, Shawn Mendes was just a teenager in Pickering, Ontario, uploading six-second acoustic covers to the video-sharing app Vine. His rapid ascent from internet sensation to bonafide pop star officially kicked off on June 26, 2014, with the release of his debut single, “Life of the Party”.
From Vine to Vinyl: The Birth of a Pop Career
In 2013, Mendes began capturing millions of loops and views by posting short snippets of popular songs. His soulful voice, acoustic guitar work, and boy-next-door charm quickly caught the attention of Artist and Repertoire (A&R) executive Andrew Gertler, who brought him to Island Records.
When the label signed the 15-year-old singer, they wasted little time introducing him to the world as a serious solo artist rather than just a social media personality. They released “Life of the Party” as the lead single from The Shawn Mendes EP, setting the stage for what would become a historic debut.
Inside “Life of the Party”
Co-written by Ido Zmishlany and Scott Harris, “Life of the Party” is an empowering, acoustic-driven pop ballad. Interestingly, Zmishlany originally drafted the song as an upbeat track, but felt the fast tempo clashed with the emotional gravity of the lyrics. Recognizing that the title could represent a powerful juxtaposition, they stripped it back to a piano-led arrangement.
The song’s message centered heavily on teenage identity, self-acceptance, and mental well-being. Mendes described the track’s intent to media outlets at the time, explaining:
“The song is basically about loving who you are as an individual… We go through this stage where you feel like you don’t really belong, like quite uncomfortable. ‘Life of the Party’ is just saying, ‘Don’t freak out if you feel like you’re different, love who you are’.”
Breaking Records Right Out of the Gate
The response to his first-ever single exceeded all expectations. Within just 90 minutes of its release, “Life of the Party” rocketed to Number 1 on the iTunes charts.
More impressively, the track debuted at Number 24 on the US Billboard Hot 100. This milestone made the 15-year-old Mendes the youngest artist ever to debut in the top 25 of the Hot 100 with a debut single. It also proved that his digital fanbase could successfully translate into mainstream commercial success.
