How to Use Midjourney on Discord: A Beginner’s Guide
Midjourney is one of the most powerful AI image generators available, capable of turning simple text descriptions into breathtaking works of art. Interestingly, Midjourney doesn’t operate through its own standalone app or website interface for its core creation engine; instead, it lives entirely inside Discord.
If you are new to the platform, jumping into a busy Discord server can feel a bit overwhelming. This complete, step-by-step guide will walk you through setting up your account, generating your first images, and using helpful commands.
Step 1: Set Up Your Discord Account and Join the Server
Before you can create any art, you need a Discord account and access to the official Midjourney community.
- Create Discord Account: If you don’t already have one, download the Discord app (desktop or mobile) or head over to the web version to sign up for a free account.
- Join the Midjourney Server:
- Log into Discord, look at the left-hand server sidebar, and click the
+(Add Server) button. - Click Join a Server.
- Type or paste the official invite link:
discord.gg/midjourneyand hit Join.
- Log into Discord, look at the left-hand server sidebar, and click the
Step 2: Choose a Subscription Plan
While you can join the Discord server for free to look around, generating images requires an active subscription.
- Go to the official website at midjourney.com and click Sign In (using your Discord credentials).
- Click on Subscribe and pick a plan that fits your budget and usage needs (such as the Basic or Standard tiers). Complete the secure checkout, and you’re ready to create.
Step 3: Find Your Creative Space
Head back into the Discord application and open the Midjourney server.
- Look for channels on the left sidebar named
#newbies-[number](like#newbies-42). - These public rooms are specifically designed for beginners to practice and test out commands.
Step 4: Generate Your First Image with /imagine
The magic happens through Discord “slash commands”. To bring an idea to life, follow these steps:
- Click into the message text box of any
#newbieschannel and type/imagine. - A small pop-up menu for the command will appear. Click or press Tab/Enter to select
/imagine prompt:. - Type out what you want to see. Be descriptive! For example:
/imagine prompt: a cozy futuristic treehouse in a glowing magical forest, cinematic lighting, vibrant colors - Hit Enter to send the command.
The Midjourney Bot will take about 30 to 60 seconds to process your request, eventually spitting out a grid of four unique image variations based on your description.
Step 5: Upscale and Modify Your Results
Underneath your newly generated 2×2 grid, you will see two rows of buttons: U1, U2, U3, U4 and V1, V2, V3, V4.
- Upscale Buttons (U1–U4): The numbers correspond to the four images in the grid (1 is top-left, 2 is top-right, 3 is bottom-left, 4 is bottom-right). Clicking an upscale button tells the bot to isolate that specific image and blow it up into a higher-resolution, standalone file.
- Variation Buttons (V1–V4): If you like the general vibe of one image but want to see a few similar alternatives, clicking a variation button will generate a brand new grid based on that specific choice.
Handy Midjourney Commands to Know
As you get more comfortable, these extra commands will help streamline your workflow:
| Command | What It Does |
| :— | :— |
| /settings | Pulls up a visual menu to change your default version, styling preferences, and speed modes. |
| /blend | Allows you to upload 2 to 5 different images and fuse their aesthetics together into a brand-new creation. |
| /describe | Upload an image you like, and the bot will write four sample prompts trying to mimic its style. |
| /info | Checks your account details, remaining fast GPU hours, and active jobs. |
💡 Pro Tip for Beginners: Because public
#newbieschannels move at lightning speed (with hundreds of people posting every minute), your generated images can quickly get lost in the chat scroll. To keep things clean, you can click on the Midjourney Bot and send it a Direct Message (DM) to generate art in a private space, or invite the bot to your own private Discord server!
