Navigating Video Rotation in Google Vids: What You Need to Know
Google Vids has transformed how teams collaborate on presentations, marketing materials, and internal communications. By bringing Google’s signature real-time collaborative DNA to video creation, it makes putting together a professional-looking clip as easy as drafting a Slides presentation.
However, users diving into the timeline editor often hit a minor roadblock: What happens when you need to rotate a video clip?
The Current Reality: Can You Rotate Video Clips in Google Vids?
As of right now, Google Vids does not feature a direct tool to rotate video clips.
If you click on an image, text box, or shape on your canvas, you will find rotation controls under the format options. But if you click on an uploaded or inserted video clip, the formatting panel allows you to tweak size, position, playback timing, sound, and animations—leaving out a physical rotation button.
Because of this limitation, if your source video was shot sideways or upside down, trying to drop it straight into Google Vids will leave you tilting your head.
Workarounds: How to Fix Your Video Orientation
If you have a mis-oriented video file that needs to make its way into a Google Vids project, use these simple workarounds to get the job done:
-
Pre-Rotate Using an External Tool or Google Photos
- Before uploading your clip into Google Vids, open the video file in a quick editor.
- You can use native tools like Google Photos on mobile/web, a quick utility tool on your computer (like QuickTime on Mac or the Photos app on Windows), or a free online video editor.
- Rotate the video to the correct upright position and save/export it.
- Upload the newly oriented MP4 file into your Google Vids project.
-
Adjust Your Project’s Overall Aspect Ratio
- If your challenge is matching a vertical (9:16) smartphone video or a square (1:1) clip with a horizontal layout, remember that Google Vids lets you change the project’s overall dimensions.
- Head into your project settings to switch between Widescreen (16:9), Vertical (9:16), or Square (1:1) to better fit your media assets before arranging your scenes.
Looking Ahead
Google Workspace updates its tools rapidly, heavily driven by user feedback. While direct video rotation isn’t embedded in the video formatting menu yet (unlike image rotation), Google Vids continues to roll out robust timeline controls, advanced trimming, and AI-assisted creation features.
Until a native clip-rotation toggle is added, a quick 10-second fix in an external editor or Google Photos will keep your Google Vids workflow smooth and professional.
