Beyond the Bloodline: The Anatomy of Terror in Ai Da Gan’s Rule (Kingdom: Ashin of the North)

When Netflix’s acclaimed zombie thriller series Kingdom expanded its cinematic universe with the special side-sode Kingdom: Ashin of the North, it traded the intricate court politics of Joseon for the brutal, freezing frontier of the northern borderlands. Amidst a narrative soaked in grief and vengeance, the special introduced a magnetic, terrifying force of nature: Ai Da Gan, played with chilling charisma by actor Koo Kyo-hwan.

Far from a conventional, mustache-twirling villain, Ai Da Gan anchors the geopolitical tension of the film, acting as both a catalyst for ultimate tragedy and a product of the ruthless era he inhabits.

Who is Ai Da Gan?

Ai Da Gan is the fearsome chieftain of the Pajeowi (United Jurchen) tribe, a powerful and aggressive faction operating along the borders of Ming China and Joseon. Defined by his towering presence, wild hair, and unyielding tactical cunning, Ai Da Gan commands absolute fear and loyalty from his warriors.

Unlike the polished generals of Joseon, Ai Da Gan is a product of the harsh northern wilderness—surviving through strength, intimidation, and territorial expansion. His ultimate ambition is to elevate his people and exert power over the lands that look down upon them, making him a volatile piece on the geopolitical chessboard.

The Catalyst of Catastrophe: Manipulation and Massacre

Ai Da Gan’s most defining—and destructive—role in the Kingdom mythos stems from a tragic web of political scapegoating.

The military commander Min Chi-rok, desperate to cover up a diplomatic disaster involving missing Jurchen hunters, orchestrates a brutal deception. He frames Ashin’s remote village (a marginalized group of Piejong Jurchens living on Joseon soil) for the slaughter of fifteen Jurchen tribesmen.

Enraged by what he believes is a heinous betrayal by fellow Jurchens, Ai Da Gan acts swiftly and mercilessly. He leads a devastating raid, slaughtering Ashin’s entire village. In doing so, Ai Da Gan unknowingly signs his own death warrant and unleashes a monster far worse than any political faction could anticipate: a surviving, vengeance-driven Ashin.

Koo Kyo-hwan’s Masterclass in Understated Menace

A large part of why Ai Da Gan leaves such a lingering impression despite his limited screen time is the performance of Koo Kyo-hwan. Known for his incredible range in projects like D.P. and Escape, Koo brings a unique flavor of unpredictability to the chieftain.

Instead of playing Ai Da Gan as a roaring brute, Koo infuses him with a casual, almost eerie stillness. He possesses the quiet confidence of a apex predator who knows no one can match him in a fight. Whether he is negotiating with trembling Joseon officials or executing swift battlefield justice, his eyes convey an unsettling mix of pragmatic calculation and casual cruelty.

The Fatal Reckoning

For all his military might and terrifying aura, Ai Da Gan’s downfall is brought about by the very girl whose life he shattered. Ashin’s journey from a helpless child watching her family burn to a cold, calculated architect of death culminates in a fateful confrontation.
