Before the Spotlight: The Fascinating Pre-Debut Journey of Song Kang

Long before he earned titles like “Netflix’s Son” and captured hearts globally in hits like Sweet Home, Nevertheless, and My Demon, Song Kang was just a regular guy navigating the uncertainties of youth.

Before the cameras, magazine covers, and millions of social media followers, his life was defined by quiet aspirations, athletic roots, and a winding path of self-discovery.

An Athletic Lineage and Artistic Household

Born on April 23, 1994, in Suwon, South Korea, Song Kang grew up in a household with a strong background in physical fitness. His father was a professional artistic gymnast, and his grandfather was a wrestler. Given his family tree, it would have seemed natural for Song Kang to follow a similar track into professional sports. However, he often admitted that he didn’t feel cut out for the grueling life of a professional athlete.

Instead, creativity balanced out the athletic energy at home. His mother was a piano teacher, which led to Song Kang learning to play the piano at an early age—winning several elementary school music competition awards. Though he briefly put the keyboard aside because he felt pushed into it, that early musical foundation would ironically surface years later in his acting projects and fan meetings.

Blueprints and Big Screens: Early Childhood Ambitions

Acting wasn’t actually Song Kang’s first childhood dream. Growing up, he was captivated by structural design and aesthetics. Inspired by striking photographs he saw, he spent a good portion of his youth dreaming of becoming an architect or a furniture designer.

Ultimately, he shelved those blueprints because, by his own admission, he had “no idea where to start”.

The turning point toward the entertainment industry came from a cinematic masterpiece. Like millions around the world, a young Song Kang watched Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic. The emotional depth and magnetic screen presence of DiCaprio left a profound impression on him, planting the first quiet seed of a desire to become an actor.

The Idol Scout Phenomenon (and Why He Said No)

With his striking height (1.86m / 6’1″), effortless proportions, and sharp, boy-next-door visuals, it was only a matter of time before the entertainment industry noticed him.

During his youth and university years, Song Kang was frequently scouted by K-pop idol agencies. With multiple casting offers on the table, many expected him to transition into training for a boy group. However, Song Kang turned them down. His heart was entirely set on acting. He wanted to study the craft deeply and build a foundation as a dramatic actor rather than stepping onto a music stage.

To pursue this goal, he enrolled in the prestigious Konkuk University Department of Film Arts—sharing an alma mater with other notable stars, including BTS’s Jin.

Overcoming Loneliness in Seoul

Moving to Seoul on his own for university marked a massive shift in his life. Plunged into the unfamiliar silence of living alone away from his family, Song Kang turned to a unique habit to cope with the isolation: keeping a diary.

Every night, he would write down his thoughts, focusing specifically on analyzing his own strengths and weaknesses. Far from being a gloomy exercise, this routine became a powerful tool for building his self-esteem during his rookie struggles. To this day, the habit of self-reflection remains a core part of who he is.

From Trainee to Mainstream

After rigorous training under his agency, Namoo Actors, Song Kang finally made his official small-screen debut in 2017 with the tvN series The Liar and His Lover.

Looking back at his pre-debut era, it’s clear that Song Kang’s journey wasn’t an overnight accident. It was shaped by quiet introspection, a refusal to take shortcuts (turning down idol offers to focus on acting), and a lifelong appreciation for arts, music, and design. Those formative years of journaling and searching for his path built the emotional resilience that he now brings to every complex character he plays.
