Rewriting the Commercial Break: Are TV Ads Actually Personalized?
Remember sitting on the living room rug as a kid, watching Saturday morning cartoons or a prime-time family sitcom, when a loud commercial for a local car dealership or a fast-food burger came on? Chances are, everyone else in your neighborhood watching that exact same channel saw the exact same commercial at the exact same time.
For decades, television advertising operated like a megaphone. Broadcasters cast the widest net possible, hoping that out of the millions of people tuned in, enough would buy the product to justify the massive price tag.
Today, that megaphone has turned into a scalpel. If you have ever wondered why your friend living across town sees a commercial for electric SUVs while you get an ad for a local pizza joint—even though you are watching the exact same show—you aren’t imagining things. Television ads have entered the era of personalization.
The Shift from Broadcast to “Addressable TV”
To understand how TV ads became personalized, it helps to look at the technology driving it. The industry calls this Addressable TV.
Unlike traditional broadcast or cable TV, which sends a single video feed to every home in a specific geographic region, addressable technology allows different commercials to be dynamically swapped into the same ad break at the household level.
